May was both Disability Insurance Awareness
Month and Mental
Health Month. In support of these
themes, Guardian launched a month-long educational campaign centered on a
microsite featuring a consumer quiz on disability and depression. For
every completed quiz, Guardian pledged to donate $1 to support Mental Health America.
Thanks to you and many others who took the time to visit
the site and take the quiz, Guardian will be
donating $10,000 to Mental Health America, the country's leading
mental health non-profit organization.
Equally important to raising money was helping to educate consumers about this often misunderstood disease, which is a
leading cause of disability.
Common Issue with
Major Impact
Based on the quiz
results, consumers were uninformed about the prevalence of mental health
problems and the associated costs to the U.S.:
-
In a typical office of 20 people, each year, 4
people will likely suffer from a mental health problem.
-
Untreated and mistreated mental illness costs
the United States about $150 billion in lost productivity each year.
Consumers were much
more likely to already have a solid understanding of the facts about depression
itself (e.g. how it's treated, its causes, etc). This may be a reflection of widespread
experience on a personal level or through a friend, family member or co-worker.
On behalf of Guardian and Mental Health America, thanks again for your
support!
